Dr. Innis attended Indiana University at Bloomington with a major in Biology before attending Logan Chiropractic College in St. Louis, MO where he graduated Magna Cum Laude with a Bachelors in Human Biology and Doctor of Chiropractic (DC) in January of 1983. He also obtained his certification to perform acupuncture from National University of Health Sciences.

Dr. Innis opened Eastwind Chiropractic Center in Charlotte, NC later that year and has built his life and practice around it ever since. He and his wife, Shyrl, have four children. Believing that doctors need to be active in their communities, he held secretary and vice president positions in the North Carolina Chiropractic Association's Southeast districts and is a past president of the Mint Hill Business Association.
